Beta-glucans are high molecular weight, soluble fibers that are naturally found in the cell walls of grains, bacteria and fungi. Like all dietary fiber, beta-glucans are not absorbed in the small intestine, but are metabolized (fermented) predominantly into short-chain fatty acids in the large intestine by the bacteria located there. These short-chain fatty acids are, among other things, an important energy supplier for the intestinal mucosa cells.
